Mysuru: The chief minister’s elder sister Chikkamma died at a private hospital in the city late on Friday night, forcing Siddaramaiah to cancel all his engagements and fly down to Mysuru on Saturday.

He attended the funeral at Devegowdanahundi, 5km from his native Siddaramanahundi in Mysuru taluk. His family members, including wife Parvathi, were present.

Chikkamma, 73, was hospitalized last month after she developed health complications. Siddaramaiah had dropped in at the hospital while he was in the city during Dasara festival last week. He had spent over an hour with her, recollecting their childhood days.

Chikkamma was suffering from kidney disorders for over a year. She leaves behind three sons and as many daughters. Her mortal remains was kept at their house in the village, where villagers and relatives offered their last respects.

Siddaramaiah got emotional while recollecting his association with his sister. “She lived with us for sometime after her marriage. Her children grew up in our home,” he added.

The villagers remembered that Chikkamma was the one who looked after Siddaramaiah’s educational expenses during his student days. She was happy with his administration right from his minister days, they stated. She had distributed sweets among the villagers when he became the chief minister, they added.
Siddaramaiah arrived at the village by 12.30pm and offered his last respects. He was with the family members during the last rites which was performed at a farmland owned by the deceased’s family. Along with him, Yathindra Siddaramaiah, MLAs M K Somashekar and Puttaranga Shetty were present.
