Mysuru: A pre-dawn demolition drive on Tuesday to reclaim a lake area in Ghousia Nagarwas halted after residents backed by elected representatives exerted pressure on the civic authorities.
Ayub Khan, a Congress corporator and former mayor, rushed to spot soon after Mysuru City Corporation commenced a drive to clear encroachments from the dried lake area.

After an hour-long discussion, the corporation team left the venue. By that time, they had brought down four houses on the encroached land. Sources claimed that the residents sought time to shift from the location. People constructed houses in the area and have been living there for the last few years. MCC authorities conceived a plan to construct a road there and the plan was pending since years.

Ayub Khan, an assembly aspirant from Narasimharaja segment, lambasted the move of the civic authorities to demolish houses of the residents who are daily-wage earners, without offering them any help.

MCC staffers along with police arrived at the spot before day-break. They shifted the belongings of the residents out of the houses and started pulling down the structures.

“We are not against any development works. Officials are claiming it is a lake area and now they want to build a road there. It is again illegal. I questioned the authorities as to how a road can be constructed on a lake bed and demanded them to put it in writing that they will build a road there. Later, MCC officials of zone-9, who had taken up the demolition drive left the venue after giving time to residents,” Ayub claimed.According to Ayub, the land falls under survey number 132 in Ghousia Nagar and for a long time it has remained dry as houses have come up in the surrounding areas, thus blocking the flow of water there.

The lake is a surrounded by several slums.
