MANDYA: One daily wager died while two others injured in an explosion at a stone quarry in Pandavapura in Mandya district on Thursday morning. Deceased has been identified as Narayanan.

Pandavapura police have registered case against stone quarry owner based on a complaint by Chennagamma, wife of deceased.

Meanwhile, Raitha Sangha activists staged a protest at the Pandavapura town urging the district administration to stop the stone quarrying in the Taluk.

According to the police, the blast was reported from the stone quarry owned by Sudarshan of Babybetta. According to the police, Narayanan died on the spot while two others Shambhu and Lokesh sustained injuries. They have been admitted to hospital in Mysuru.

“A case has been registered against quarry owner based on a complaint by Chennagamma, wife of deceased labour Narayanan,” said Deepak, circle police inspector.

Meanwhile, hundreds of activists of Raitha Sangha organised a protest demanding action against the culprits and immediate ban on quarrying in the entire Taluk. The protestors blocked Srirangapattana-Bidar state highway.

Agitators alleged that even though Narayanan died due to the blast, stone quarry management has tried to hush up the incident. They urged the district police to investigate past incidents of deaths in the quarry.

Meanwhile, Pandavapura MLA and Raitha Sangha Leader K S Puttannaiah urged the state government to order Lokayukta inquiry into Babybetta mining by stating that most of the contractors didn’t have mining license.

Speaking to reporters, K S Puttannaiah informed that due to the stone quarrying in the Babybetta, KRS dam is also facing threat. “We have decided to hold a massive protest in front of DC office in Mandya on October 3 against the mining,” he said.
