Heavy Rain Lashes Kodagu

The Southwest Monsoon has intensified in Kodagu district which is the catchment area for the Cauvery, in the last 24 hours. Heavy rain has been lashing Kodagu and it threw normal life out of gear.
The water level in rivers Cauvery and Lakshmanatheertha have increased considerably. Incessant rain in the district has resulted in loss of property and life, and affected normal life considerably. There are reports of extensive damage to houses in many parts of the district.
Today, Madikeri Taluk received 124.3 mm rainfall, Virajpet 82.6 mm, Somwarpet taluk 72.7 mm and the district average is 93.2 mm.
Madikeri town received 97.1 mm, Napoklu 135.2 mm, Sampaje 85.00 mm, Bhagamandala 180.0 mm, Virajpet 54.0 mm, Hudikeri 120.0 mm, Srimangala 107.2 mm, Ponnampet 77.4 mm, Ammathi 80.0 mm, Balele 57.0 mm, Somwarpet 62.0, Shanivarsanthe 56.7 mm, Shanthalli 222.0 mm, Kodlipet 68.4 mm, Kushalnagar 11.4 mm and Suntikoppa 16.0 mm.
The water level in Cauvery is gradually rising in Bethri, Bhagamandala and Siddapur.
Harangi dam level details: Maximum level is 2,859.00 ft, today’s level is 2799.44 feet. There is an inflow of 3,968 cusecs and an outflow of 30 cusecs.
Power supply in major parts of the district has been affected since the last few days. Traffic movement has been badly hit due to overflowing water or collapse of trees and electricity poles that are blocking roads. Water supply has been affected in Madikeri town, coupled with power outage since three days.
At the Triveni Sangama in Bhagamandala, the Bhagamandala-Madikeri and Bhagamandala-Ayyangeri roads were flooded by the rising waters of the Cauvery. If the same rain continues in the next 24 hours, Bhagamandala will be submerged, said officials.
Rainwater entered some houses in Siddapur village and the District Administration has arranged rescue operations owing to flood-like situation in these villages. Kodagu DC has formed supervising committees for speedy action. The control room set up by the District Administration is functioning round-the-clock to keep track of the situation and take up relief measures.
Heavy rain was reported in Madikeri, Napoklu, Bhagamandala, Talacauvery, Virajpet, Gonikoppal, Somwarpet, Chettalli, Siddapur, Madapura, Shanthalli, Pushpagiri, Ponnampet, Srimangala, Kutta and Balele.
Vehicular traffic was disrupted at Bettageri, Katakeri and Aruvathokkalu, following the uprooting of electricity poles and trees. Abbi, Irupu and Mallalli waterfalls have come alive in the district due to the incessant rain.
