MYSURU: Srirangapatna police arrested a security guardfor allegedly trying to sell his two-year-old daughter at a private bus stand in Ganjam on Tuesday.

Vinod, 35, a resident of MS Ramaiah Nagar in Bengaluru, was arrested after people at the bus stand alerted them when they saw him trying to sell the toddler.

The girl was admitted to Jogula Dattu Seva Kendra, a foster home, in Melkote after she was produced before the Child Welfare Committee (CWC), while Vinod has been sent to jail.

Vinod, an alcoholic, had no permanent job and worked as a daily wage worker in a gas agency. He did odd jobs before joining as a private security guard in an agency in Bengaluru.

He told police that he was married twice before and has three children from the first marriage and two kids from the second. After his first two wives left him, he married Rajamma and had a daughter and a son.
Mandya district child protection officer S Diwakar said that there were discrepancies in Vinod’s statements. “We found that he was not revealing all the facts. We can’t be sure if the toddler is his or if he kidnapped the child from Bengaluru and brought her here to sell,” he said.

Diwakar said that the CWC has informed all child helplines and has sent a photograph of the rescued child to them to see if a missing complaint has been registered in any of the police stations in Bengaluru and other districts.

Based on the information given by Vinod about his family and his residence, a probationary officer from the CWC along with Srirangapatna police visited Bengaluru to verify the details.
