2 days after man found dead, relatives suspect foul play

MYSURU: Two days after the charred remains of a man was found in a Nanjangud village, his relatives are suspecting foul play and believe that is wife is responsible for his death.

Nanjangud police found a body beyond identification in the fields of Mahesh and Madevanayaka, residents of Kasuvinahalli on Sunday. Police had sought public help to identify the person and meanwhile were searching in their records to match with missing persons of similar features. Early on Tuesday his relatives identified the person as Nagaraj Shetty (36) and accused his wife Mani for the death.

Nagaraj of Gundlupet, Chamarajanagar went missing after he for his in-laws’ place in Makanapura, Nanjangud to bring her back home. Mani who had married Nagaraj left home in Gundlupet after quarreling with him weeks ago. The couple was married five years ago and have a child together.

According to Nagaraj’s brother, he left for Nanjangud but didn’t return on Sunday. “Initially we thought he may have been staying at his wife’s place but when he didn’t turn up the next day we tried calling him but his phone was switched off and enquiries didn’t reveal his whereabouts. Later, police told us about an unidentified body they found near Kasuvinahalli, which is close to Makanapura and we then identified him.”

Police said Nagaraj’s body was recovered from the fields of Mahesh and Mahadevanayaka who summoned us to the spot after they noticed the body. According to them, the haystack was set on fire by unknown persons and when they reached spot they found the body.
It is still unclear whether Nagaraj has been murdered or had committed suicide. Nagaraj’s relatives believe he may have been murdered by his wife and her paramour, as the couple was fighting over an extramarital affair. Nagaraj’s wife Mani says she was not in the village on the fateful day, and has also denied being in an illicit relationship.
The police are probing the case.
